When should you actually get the haircut
Start with what real couples say, because this is a question people compare notes on, not just search. A WeddingWire thread that has been running since 2018 shows the real spread: answers run from the morning of the wedding to a week before, with two or three days out coming up more than once.
The spread makes sense once you know how fast hair grows. Cleveland Clinic puts it at about a centimeter a month, which is roughly a millimeter every three days. On a tight fade, where the sides start at almost nothing, a millimeter shows, so a fade wants to be cut close to the day. On a longer scissor cut, a few days of growth barely registers, so a week out costs you nothing and buys you time. That matters because every cut here comes with a seven day adjustment: if something is not quite right, tell us and we fix it free, and a week out still leaves room to use it before the wedding. If you are changing the style itself, not just refreshing it, go earlier still, and it gives you time to notice before your mother in law does.

If a straight razor shave is part of the plan, the timing rule is different from the haircut rule, and it matters more.

Book a trial a couple of weeks ahead, then book the real one closer to the date.
There is a real reason behind that advice. The American Academy of Dermatology says razor bumps are caused when shaving irritates the skin, and its prevention advice is to shave in the direction the hair grows, soften the hair with warmth first, and keep the blade fresh. If you are prone to bumps, your wedding morning is not the moment to discover that a very close shave does not agree with your skin. A trial run two weeks out gives your skin time to settle and gives your barber a chance to adjust the approach before it counts.

They are a groom, groomsmen and fathers of the bride, all needing to be in chairs on the same tight morning, and coordinating that by yourself across five schedules is its own kind of stress you do not need on your wedding day.
